“MeZan” is an Arabic word that means Balance. Most humans are never in Balance the whole time, they come in and out of it as they react to changes in their bodies, thoughts and emotions. MeZan Yoga teaches a set of Engineering tools that can be learned by all humans to rebuild their bodies and reshape their thoughts so that they achieve a constant state of balance with a healthy body, peaceful mind and meaningful living.
As an Engineer I know that Engineering means “Making things the way we want them to Be!”. Throughout history, engineers have worked hard to make our external world the way we want it to be. They built fast transportation systems, wonderful houses and efficient communication networks that made our external world a comfortable place to live in.
However, no matter how comfortable our external world is, our experience of it depends on how we feel on the inside. In that context, MeZan Yoga is developed as a set of Engineering tools that can be used by everyone to fix their inner world so they are able to enjoy the beauty of the external world.
To fix our inner world, we use three main Engineering Tools; First one is Movement (or yoga Asanas) to fix the physical body (Structure), second is Breath (Pranayama) to fix the intelligent body or the mind (Operation), and third is the Sound (or Mantras) to bring awareness to the true self (Soul) away from the body and mind. By using these three tools to fix the inner world, we can achieve true balance and we will always be able to enjoy the comforts and experiences of the external world.
- Structure: Engineering the Body with Movement (Asanas)
The movement tool or (Asanas) has three main aspects that are implemented in MeZan Yoga:
- Alignment: Just like the stability of a building depends on having correct foundations, so is alignment in yoga poses. As we become aware of the placement of our hands and feet on the yoga mat, we become more aware of our inner feelings, fears and desires.
- Awareness:Which is the understanding of the effect of each asana on the muscles, joints and most importantly on our feelings.
- Appreciation:which is keeping the focus on the journey and not the result and appreciating the incremental progress in our bodies and minds with every practice.
- Operation: Engineering the Mind with the Breath (Pranayama)
The breath, when used correctly, is an effective Engineering tool that can have a great effect on the mind. There are three main types of breath that can be used to bring more awareness and enhance the function of the mind:
- Ujjayi Breath:This breath which mimics the sound of deep ocean waves is a calming breath which is a powerful tool that can be used to overcome anxiety and fear built up in our minds in stressful situations.
- Nadi Shodhana Breath:Also known as Alternate Nostril breathing helps in clearing up energy paths inside the body which results in increased concentration and mind power when working on important tasks.
- Kapalbhati Breath:Is an energizing breath which builds internal heat and shakes away laziness and tiredness.
- Soul: Engineering the Human System with Sound (Mantra)
Perhaps the most important Yoga tool to learn, for fixing the entire Human system, is Sound or (Mantras). Modern science proves that there is a sound attached to each cell in our bodies and to each physical matter around us.
It is important to understand that using specific sounds repeatedly (These can be Sanskrit mantras, verses from the scriptures or simple “AUM” sound) helps in purifying the inner system from misconceptions and bringing us closer to the true pure nature of our existence.
The promise of MeZan Yoga is that by learning how to use the three Engineering Tools of (SOS) to fix your inner world, you will become a kind of a “Super Human” with Radiating Energy, balanced living and eternally joyful existence.
